My mother IMed me first thing this morning to let me know that my federal tax refund has finally arrived – by paper check. Which I am way less than pleased about, as I was under the assumption that I would be getting it by direct deposit. This means that, not only will I not have access to the money until the end of the week, but that my stimulus payment will not be coming until the end of June. Unbelievable.
Its largely my own fault, I guess. See, my parents own their own business, and my mother does all of the payroll and bookkeeping for the business. As part of the deal, the accountants who do the taxes for the business also do the taxes for all of the family members, for free. For the last few years, they have managed to not get around to doing our taxes until the very last minute, which always infuriates me, as we get them the necessary information sometime in February. Around my birthday, I mentioned to my Mother that I was thinking of just trying to do them myself this year, to get the process over with earlier, and she didn’t have any issues with it. Of course, I then got the everlasting cold/flu/bronchitis, and was largely out of commission for the next 5 weeks. By the time I was up to thinking about taxes again, it was the first week of April, and it seemed pointless to try and do the taxes myself, so I just went along with the established plan.
Such a mistake.
Apparently, despite the fact that they had all our account numbers, the accountants are incompetent and were unable/too lazy to file our taxes so that we would get direct deposit. So, I’ve been waiting for the federal return, and now I will continue to wait for the stimulus payment. Next year, I will definitely be doing my own taxes – I’m very tired of this nonsense.
